College Football Playoff Rankings: Georgia fell out of the bracket, while Oregon, Ohio State remained steady at the top

Georgia fell from No. 3 to No. 12 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday after a 28-10 loss to Ole Miss, its second defeat of the season, while previously undefeated Miami fell from No. 4 to No. 9 after falling from No. 4 . at Georgia Tech.

If the season were to end today, the 7-2 Bulldogs would be the first team to fall out of the bracket, as No. 13 Boise State would automatically claim a spot as fifth conference champions.

“Their offenses have been inconsistent and they have suffered some turnovers,” committee chairman Warde Manuel said of Georgia. “Their defense was solid, but in their loss to Ole Miss when their offense was struggling, their defense was quite stretched.”

Oregon and Ohio State remained at the top of the rankings, while Texas, Penn State and undefeated Indiana moved behind them, giving the Big Ten four of the top five teams.

Undefeated BYU jumped from No. 9 to No. 6 after its dramatic win over rival Utah late Saturday. Tennessee remained at No. 7, while Notre Dame moved from No. 10 to No. 8.

Alabama, coming off a blowout win at LSU, moved up one spot from No. 11 to No. 10, while Ole Miss jumped from No. 16 to No. 11. The Rebels would get the final overall berth if the season ended today.

Manuel said the fact that Alabama and Ole Miss both beat Georgia head-to-head contributed to the Dawgs falling so far.

Is Georgia in trouble?

While Dawgs fans may be freaking out about being left out of this week’s hypothetical bracket, Georgia will move right back up if it beats seventh-ranked Tennessee at home this week. It would be Georgia’s second Top 10 win this season (it previously defeated No. 3 Texas), and the two losses came to the committee’s No. 9 (Alabama) and No. 10 (Ole Miss) teams.

But the Dawgs wouldn’t be out of the woods yet. They close with Georgia Tech, which defeated Miami last weekend. Barring a wave of upsets elsewhere, Georgia likely can’t afford a third loss, unless it comes in the SEC championship game.

Can BYU breathe easier?

BYU, then 8-0, trailed five teams with one loss each from the Big Ten and SEC last week. With Miami and Georgia dropping, the Cougars made up ground and now have some breathing room if they lose in the Big 12 championship game.

But as Georgia discovered, the committee can suddenly drop a team at any time. BYU won’t really be safe unless it gets an automatic berth.

How is the G5 race going?

Boise State has fallen one spot from last week but is still the highest-ranked team in the Group of Five, best positioned to earn one of the five bids reserved for conference champions if the Broncos take the Mountain West win.

But there are now two American Athletic Conference teams in the rankings. Undefeated Army is at No. 24, while Tulane went 8-2 coming in at No. 25. The Green Wave, also undefeated in the AAC, will play at Navy with a chance to clinch a spot in the conference title game, but it seems unlikely that Tulane will do that. good for twelve spots ahead of Boise State, unless the Broncos lose once.

Army, which has been plagued by its poor schedule thus far, has a golden opportunity to boost its resume when it faces No. 10 Notre Dame next week.
