Johnny Depp’s lawyer has said the jury’s verdict “confirms what we’ve said from the start” – stressing that the allegations he abused ex-wife Amber Heard were without evidence and defamatory.

Outside the court in Fairfax, Virginia, a cheering Camille Vasquez praised the jury’s five men and two women for their decision, reached at the end of a six-week trial and after 12 hours of deliberation.

They overwhelmingly found in favor of 58-year-old Depp and concluded that Heard, 36, had defamed him with her 2018 Washington Post issue.

The jury awarded him $15 million in damages, and her $2 million for a portion of her counterclaim.

“Today’s verdict confirms what we’ve said from the start: that the allegations against Johnny Depp are defamatory and unsupported by any evidence,” Vasquez said.

“We are grateful to the jury, so grateful for their careful consideration.”

Depp was not in court for the verdict, having traveled to England to perform with his band.

Heard struggled to keep her composure, but was calm. Immediately after, she released a statement saying she was “heartbroken” and described it as a setback to freedom of expression and to women.

“The disappointment I feel today is indescribable,” she said.

“I’m devastated that the mountain of evidence still wasn’t enough to withstand my ex-husband’s disproportionate power, influence and power.

“I am even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It’s a setback. It sets the clock back to a time when a woman who spoke out and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.

“It puts back the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously.

“I’m sorry I lost this case. But sadder still, I seem to have lost the right I thought I had as an American—to speak freely and openly.’

Depp, meanwhile, thanked the jury for their verdict, which “gave me my life back.”

“Six years ago, my life, the lives of my children, the lives of those closest to me, as well as the lives of the people who have supported me and believed in me for years, were changed forever. All in the blink of an eye,” he wrote.

Depp said he was facing an “endless barrage of hateful content.”

“From the outset, the aim of this case was to bring the truth to light, regardless of the outcome,” Depp continued in his statement.

“Speaking the truth was something I owed to my children and to everyone who has stood firm in their support of me. I feel at peace in the knowledge that I’ve finally achieved that.’

He went on to say that he hopes his “quest for truth” has helped others who have found themselves in his “situation” to never give up.

Heard can still choose to appeal the decision, but legal analysts believe it likely won’t be effective unless new evidence emerges.
