NEW DELHI: Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of making divisive and defamatory statements during election rallies, the Congress on Thursday petitioned the Election Commission seeking action against BJP officials for violating rules of election behavior.
General Secretary of the Congress Jairam Ramesh wrote to EC, detailing Modi and Shah’s speeches in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. He said Modi in his speeches accused Congress functionaries Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi of being against SC, ST and OBCs and repeated the baseless allegations at several rallies while also allying Pakistan with Congress. He said the claims were clearly intended to promote religious and caste hostility. He made similar charges against Shah.
Ramesh demanded that the EC file FIRs against the two BJP functionaries and immediately ban them from contesting elections.
“Our complaints to the Election Commission against the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister for their divisive, false and malicious speeches in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. We have asked the EC to investigate the BJP and its functionaries for their blatant electoral violations. We hope that the EC handles these complaints with the urgency they require,” he wrote on X.
