Congress: Ex-CJI opened Pandora's box on Places of Worship Act
NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh on Saturday said that the Places of Worship (Special Facilities) Act, 1991 is in news these days because of certain oral observations made in 2022 by the then Chief Justice of India are made DY Chandrachud who have since opened a “Pandora’s box”.
On May 20, 2022, the top court had made oral observations while hearing a dispute involving the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi says that the PoW Act does not prevent the determination of the religious character of a structure as on August 15, 1947.
In his post on just retired Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on May 20, 2022, which has since opened a Pandora’s box.
“On the occasion of this parliamentary debate, perhaps one of the greatest speeches in the history of the Rajya Sabha was delivered by eminent author Rajmohan Gandhi, then MP of Janata Dal, representing UP,” he added.
“It was a masterclass in Indian culture, traditions, history and politics. His brilliant speech, with that beautiful excerpt from the Mahabharata, is still relevant,” the Congress official said.
Ramesh also shared screenshots of Gandhi’s speech with his post. The speech quotes Gandhi as saying that “those who opposed this bill have spoken about what they consider necessary to right the wrongs of history”. “The resounding lesson of the Mahabharata through the ages is: ‘those who with a vengeful attitude try to right the wrongs of history will only cause destruction and more destruction and more destruction,'” Gandhi had said.
Ramesh’s comments come a day after the Working Committee of Congressin the wake of the Sambhal and Ajmer shrine disputes, the proactively decided to support Law on Places of Worshipas it accused BJP of compromising the law as part of a strategy to keep polarization going. The law prohibits the conversion of any religious site after independence.
