Congress manifesto silent on restoration of Article 370 | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: While the Congress had vehemently opposed the abrogation of Article 370 after the BJP government implemented it in August 2019, its manifesto for the upcoming elections in J&K is remarkably silent on the issue.
The manifesto released on Monday does not mention the Congress’ stand on Article 370, though it does devote an entire chapter to governance. In that chapter, the party promises, among other things, “inclusive and responsible governance by ensuring that the Centre grants statehood to J&K”.
Farooq Abdullah‘S National conferencea major player in the contest and the larger partner in the alliance with Congress in J&K, has however loudly promised to restore Article 370 and the state of J&K. Of the 12 guarantees announced in the manifesto, NC has also made a worthy return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley.
The Modi government on August 5, 2019, abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to J&K. It also bifurcated the erstwhile state into two UTs — J&K and Ladakh. Following the decision, the Congress Working Committee attacked the government over the manner in which the abrogation was carried out.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday referred to the seven guarantees the party is offering to the people of J&K and reiterated in a message on X that the party promises to ensure complete state sovereignty for J&K.
