Correct criteria for creamy layers immediately, say MPs
NEW DELHI: The twin controversies over provision of ‘creamy layer’ for OBCs – pending review of income ceiling and the practice of including ‘salary’ in the ‘income’ of backward candidates from PSU background UPSC Exams – was repeated at a parliamentary panel meeting on Wednesday, with members demanding a settlement be reached without further delay.
The MPs complained that clubbing ‘salary’ into ‘income’ is hurting OBC candidates who qualify for the civil service exams.
Sources said members, including one from BJP, in the Parliamentary Committee for the Welfare of OBCsled by BJP MP Ganesh Singh, questioned the government over the non-revision of income ceiling for OBC reservations. They lamented that it was last done in 2017 and is pegged at Rs 8 lakh.
As per the norms, the income ceiling should be revised every three years to take inflation into account.
With the secretary of social justice and empowerment and a senior DoPT official present, sources said the panelists demanded that the review be carried out without delay.
