KOLKATA: Kalatan Dasgupta, an official of CPM youth department DYFI was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of plotting an attack on a doctors’ protest site in Salt Lake City, Kolkata.
This is the second arrest based on a complaint filed by the police on its own initiative after Trinamool’s former Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh released an audio conversation on Friday. In the audiotape, two people can be heard allegedly planning an attack on protesting doctors and blaming it on Bengal’s ruling TMC.
The police said Sanjib Dasthe first suspect arrested on friday had admitted that one of the voices on the tape was his and that he had given dasgupta’s name. dasgupta was then arrested on saturday at a sit-in by left-wing activists.
Ghosh released the clip and said that some Left and far-Left party workers had conspired to attack the protesting doctors while their team was on its way to meet CM Mamata Banerjee on Thursday. As he was led away by policemen, Dasgupta said his arrest was an attempt by the TMC government to divert people’s attention from the ongoing movement seeking justice for the rape and murder victim RG Kar. CPM said the voice could be an “AI-generated fake audio”. CPM state committee secretary Mohammad Selim termed the arrests as “illegal and vindictive”.
Samik Bhattacharya of the BJP questioned how Ghosh had accessed the clips and why he had released them before the police or the government could. In response, Ghosh said: “The audio leak was done by people within the same camp who had planned attacks on doctors. It is the duty of the police to verify the authenticity of the audio.”
On Saturday, Bidhannagar (Salt Lake) police official Anish Sarkar said the police’s technical departments had confirmed the “authenticity of the clip”.
