Cyclist Alessio Martinelli suffered a frightening high -speed scrench who saw him fall into a ravine during phase 16 of the Giro d’Italia.
Martinelli, who drives for VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizane, slid on the wet road Halfway through the stage to San Valentino.
The 24-year-old Italian went downhill with 110 km to enter the stage when the slippery conditions saw his bike under him.
Martinelli tumbled to the asphalt and began to slide on the surface to the side of the road, where he then dropped in a ravine.
Fortunately, no other rider was involved in the crash, while Martinelli also avoided a collision with barriers along the road as he slid off the surface.
Photos later showed a group of doctors and emergency staff who recovered Martinelli from the ravine on a stretcher.
His team later confirmed that he was being taken to the hospital, luckily revealed that he is aware and in a stable state.
A statement was: “Martinelli, victim of a fall, was transported to the hospital.
“He is currently aware and his condition is stable. Further updates about his health will be communicated during the day.”
Elsewhere, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe Rider Primoz Roglic left the race after he had suffered a crash.
Roglic claimed that he “fights to survive” before phase 16 after he crashed last week.
The Slovenian, who had not been able to ride his bike since his first fall, took a tumbling today because of the wet conditions – which made him decided to leave the race.
Brit Josh Tarling21, it was also forced to leave after he had taken a serious crash in a barrier in the wet conditions.
Tarling, Roglic and Martinelli will both have to review their conditions in the coming weeks if they look ahead to July Tour de France.
