Dalit houses set on fire, Ambedkar statue desecrated in MP
BHOPAL: Election-related violence continues in MP Vijaypur. Hours after the elections, a mob attacked a Dalit colony in Gohta village and reportedly set fire to four houses late on Wednesday night. The about 200 attackers pelted stones, set fire to houses and set fire to a transformer, locals said. They also desecrated a statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Sheopur SP Virendra Jain told the media that police had received information about a dispute between two parties. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a pile of millet husks that had been burned to ashes. No formal complaint was filed and no injuries were reported. Another official played down the incident, saying such tensions are common during elections, insisting that “no significant disruptions” occurred. Action would only be taken if a formal complaint is received, he said. There were no arrests until Thursday evening.
Congress state president Jitu Patwari accused BJP workers of attacking tribal and Dalit communities. BJP state president VD Sharma rejected Patwari’s allegations and said, “If Congress wins an election, they will tie a turban on Rahul Gandhi’s head. And when they know they are losing, it leads to hooliganism and arson. They have started blaming the government and the EVMs.”
