Dan Biggar: I just don’t understand the decision to add Owen Farrell to Lions Squad of World Class

I just don’t understand the decision to add Owen Farrell To the Lions team.
He is called in to replace Elliot Daly, but they are totally different players. It is a real shame for Daly to break his arm because he played well, but he would not start in the tests.
The power of Daly is his versatility because he can play outside, wing and full-back. He had the chance to offer coverage on the bank, but Farrell does not play any of those positions. Farrell is a 10 that can also play in Inside Center.
The Lions already have three 10s in world class Finn RussellFin Smith and Marcus Smith. And they have two world class centers in Sione Tuipulotu and Bundee Aki.
If it’s all about having a versatile option on your couch for a 6-2 split of Vooruit and Back, then Marcus Smith is a better option for that role, because he covers full-back.
Farrell hardly played rugby this year because he was injured. His move to France did not work and he returned to Saracens early. It just doesn’t look great.

Former captain of England, Owen Farrell, has earned a call-up on the British and Irish Lions team

Farrell worked as an expert who covered the warm-up collision of the lions against Argentina in Dublin

Lions head coach Andy Farrell chose to call his son into the team after he initially left him
The tour felt really positive and together, but now every question from the press conference about Owen Farrell is going. Every camera in the stadium will point to him – whether he is on the field or not – and every journalist will write about him.
Blair Kinghorn has just won the top 14 and will make his lions debut on Saturday, but that will not be the story.
Some really good rugby has been played in recent weeks, but now everyone is about Owen. They will just have to accept that.
I have no problem about coaches who choose their sons, so I’m not going to jump on the bandwagon of nepotism. However, it will only contribute to the sound.
If Andy Farrell and the management team expect it to blow quietly, they are pretty naive.
Let’s be clear, I really love Owen like a guy. When we toured together for the first time in 2017, I found him quite difficult to talk about life away from rugby.
He became a father before we toured in 2021 and he really relaxed as a man and we spent much more time together, talking a lot about golf above a coffee.
He is a surprisingly good storyteller-the most of them are about his old Saracens teammate Baz Barrington!

Farrell recently confirmed that he will return to Saracens from the start of next season

The ex-England captain only appeared 16 performances during one season in France with racing 92
Nobody doubts that Owen Farrell is a world -class player and one of the greatest players that England has ever had, but he has not played an international rugby since 2023. His last test was on the World Cup, when I was still playing for Wales!
If a 10 or 12 went down, you could just about justify it, because that is the position that Farrell plays. But there is little doubt that Finn Russell is the start 10.
Is Farrell going on the couch? Do you choose him above Fin Smith who plays really well for England? I don’t think so.
We have praised Russell all year round. He looks like the most important man. It feels like this is his moment and you don’t know what kind of impact Farrell comes in on that dynamic.
He is a great personality and he has a major influence on the team in which he is located.
This is someone who played every team he played for, because he does not sit on the rear banks.
It is all good and good that you want his winning mentality, but it comes from a struggling racing team. Australia is in eighth place in the world.

Farrell has been on three Lions tours before, but he has not been playing internationally since 2023

Farrell was part of the Lions team that won famous in Australia in 2013
Everyone thinks the Lions will win the series. They don’t play springboks. Do they really need the edge of Owen Farell to find the winning Formular?
If they want someone who has flown for his club all year round, there is a man who is in Argentina at 99 caps called George Ford.
Farrell wants to coach, so maybe there is a matter for him who shares his experience with some of the younger boys on tour, but we are not talking about Academy Guys here, we are talking about British and Irish lions.
If you piles everything up, I don’t know why you would make this call.
