Cruise ship to return to Australia in WEEKS with two-year Covid ban to officially end

Trade and Tourism Minister Dan Tehan says the ban on cruise ships is likely to end on April 17, with a formal announcement in the next few days.

Mr Tehan says the federal government is only waiting for approval from the NSW and Queensland government which are finalizing state health protocols.

“We have agreed the next day that we are going to do all the necessary work, so hopefully on Wednesday we can announce that April 17 is the day that cruising can resume,” the minister told Sky News. “

“We see absolutely no reason why we can’t make a formal announcement now that we have NSW and I’m pretty sure we’re going to ship Queensland.”

Mr Tehan said the reopening is “another piece of wonderful news” for the tourism industry and that Australia continues to reopen to the world.

The minister said the Commonwealth is ready to go for several weeks.

“We just have to make sure NSW and Queensland follow what their health officials say and if they do, we are there,” he said.

“The Commonwealth wants to go. I have been pushing for us to go for several months.
