Asked if Coote was treated unfairly by PGMOL, Clattenburg said: ‘No, because if he had a problem with drugs, he should have go to them for support.

“They would have supported him. Forget Liverpool’s stuff – that is chatter in a pub. I have been guilty with friends in the past.

‘Unfortunately, now, with recording devices and so on, the world has changed, but we have all been to the pub and had a little chat about football. I probably said things about managers and players.

‘I’m not sure if that was a career-end moment for him. It was the drug problem, especially in high -profile competitions.

“Coote allowed it to come out without any mechanism. I think that is where his career became difficult. ‘

Clattenburg, who referred almost 400 Premier League matches and the 2016 Champions League final, said he had some sympathy for Coote after the video appeared.

“As a referee, if you don’t speak a little – they call you arrogant,” said Clattenburg.

‘If you are gone, you always try to manage situations – people always ask what is and so.

Co-host Ladyman shared Clattenburg’s sympathy for Coote, but said that the video did the ‘entire referee community a huge bad service’ by nourishing the suspicions of fans about bias in the official.

Doorbell images that were originally shared by the sun showed Coote at work as a delivery person while serving his 16-month suspension from football.

The original Kloppvideo was reportedly recorded in 2020 after the controversial 1-1 draw of Liverpool against Burnley, in which Andy Robertson saw the English referee angry after he had not received a fine.

“So many people there in the weird world in which we now live are conspiracy theorists,” Ladyman said.

‘Football supporters are nowadays convinced that referees really act against their club. What Coote did play on that.

“It gave substance to the crazy edge and their theories – it gave them credibility.”
