DDA postpones demolition drive in Majnu Ka Tila | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has the demolition drive on the Yamnua floodplain near the Majnu Ka Tila gurdwara, sources said on Saturday. According to a senior police official, a demolition operation was carried out at Khyber Pass near Civil Lines to infringement on Saturday.
According to police, several temporary structures that were illegally erected on the premises of the Land and Development Office have been demolished.
Sunita, a resident of the Khyber Pass area, said: “We have been living here for decades. We have no other place to go. We want a house where we can live.”
The children of Kavita, another resident, had not yet returned from school when her house was demolished.
“Our family has been living here for a long time. We got a notice about five to six months ago that the demolition was going to happen here. Several children here go to schools. Where are we going to take them now,” Kavita said.
Another resident said: “I have no idea why this happened. We received a message a few months ago. My mother-in-law also came here after her marriage. We want a house of our own.”
The DDA announced in a public notice on Thursday that a demolition campaign will take place in the area on July 13 and 14.
People in Majnu Ka Tila, which has a significant population of Pakistani Hindus, said they received a notice from the land authority late on Thursday night asking them to vacate the area by Friday.
The notice referred to the April 3 judgment of the National Green Tribunal and the March 12 judgment of the Delhi High Court as the basis for the move.
“In accordance with the regulation, it is proposed to organize a demolition action against the encroachment of the river Yamuna floodplain area south of Gurudwara Majnu Ka Tila (West Bank) on Saturday and Sunday,” the DDA notice said.
The affected families can find temporary shelter in shelters run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), it said.
“Therefore, the residents of the area are hereby requested to vacate the area by July 12, otherwise they will be responsible for any losses incurred as a result of the demolition work against the encroachment on July 13 or later,” the notice said.
In its April 3 order, the NGT said the status report submitted by the DDA did not mention any substantial effective steps taken by the agency to remove the encroachment on the area.
The NGT has requested the agency to submit a compliance report by email no later than one week before the next hearing, July 15.
Before the Lok Sabha elections, some refugees living in Majnu Ka Tila were granted citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
