Delhi Police File FIR Over ‘Indecent’ Remarks On Late Captain Anshuman’s Widow Smriti Singh | India News – Times of India
The Delhi Police have taken legal action against a Delhi resident for making inappropriate and offensive comments online about the widow by Captain Anshuman Singha recipient of the Kirti Chakra award. The police responded to a letter from the National Commission for Women (NCW), which demanded that the man be arrested and that a comprehensive report be issued within three days.
According to the police, a complaint was filed by the NCW alleging that a social media user had posted an extremely vulgar and disrespectful comment on a photograph of the deceased soldier’s widow. The commission pointed out that the man’s comment violated “Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.” The NCW strongly condemned the behaviour and called for swift police intervention.
After preliminary assessment of the contents of the complaint, the police registered an FIR under relevant sections of BNS-2023 and IT Act 2000 at the Special Cell Police Station. An investigation into the matter has been initiated and is currently underway.
Captain Anshuman Singh, a medical officer, was posted with 26 Punjab in the Siachen Glacier area. On 19 July 2023, a fire broke out in an Indian Army ammunition depot in his camp. Seeing a fibreglass hut going up in flames, Captain Singh immediately took action to rescue four to five people trapped inside. He entered the burning medical examination room to retrieve a vital first aid kit but tragically lost his life due to the intense fire and strong winds. In recognition of his courage and sacrifice, Captain Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
The award was received by Captain Singh’s wife, Smriti, and his mother from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony honouring his courage and dedication to duty.
Recalling the day of the incident, Smriti had said, “On July 18, we had a long talk about how our lives would be for the next 50 years — we would build a house, have children. On the morning of the 19th, I got a call that he was no more. For the first 7-8 hours, we couldn’t accept that something like this could happen. Till now, I am trying to come to terms with it… thinking maybe it’s not true. Now that I have the Kirti Chakra in my hand, I realise it’s true. But it’s okay, he’s a hero. We can control a little bit of our lives because he controlled a lot. He gave up his life and family so that the other three families could be saved.”
