Delta releases new memo that raises eyebrows over underwear being required of flight attendant applicants

Delta Airlines has reminded potential new flight attendants that they must wear underwear, according to a document outlining the company’s “appearance requirements” for employees.

The airline recently published a two-page document outlining strict guidelines for how job seekers should look on its website, including a new rule on underwear.

It states that ‘appropriate underwear should be worn’ by those interviewed, ‘but it should not be visible.’

A Delta spokesperson told DailyMail.com that the change was new and that their intention was to be “more specific.”

“In the interest of transparency and clarity for all potential candidates, we encourage people to ‘dress for success’ and make a good first impression when pursuing a flight attendant position,” the spokesperson added.

Delta has included a number of other detailed rules in the document regarding the appearance of potential employees, including why you can’t have “neon” or “multicolored” nails and how long your eyelashes must be.

“Delta’s flight attendants spend the most time with our customers and are the face of our airline,” it reads.

‘To ensure your commitment to Delta’s brand and customer service, we have updated requirements for your interview, your initial qualification training, and throughout your career as a flight attendant with Delta.’

Delta stated that all staff members ‘must always observe their personal hygiene and cleanliness.’

It was explained that ‘lashes should look natural, and extreme length and volume should be avoided’, while ‘facial hair should be trimmed and neatly maintained.’

It also said that “visible tattoos” were not allowed and “must be covered with clothing or waterproof makeup.”

“Bandages are not suitable to cover tattoos,” the airline said.

Delta had a number of rules for flight attendants’ nails: ‘Fingernails must be clean, neat, trimmed and, if painted, free of damage.

‘All nails must be the same color. Neon colors, multi-colored decorations, glitter, hand-painted designs, or airbrushed nails are not allowed.’

There was even a rule about the way you smell. It said that ‘aftershave, cologne and perfume may be used’, but that they should be ‘applied lightly’.

As for the flight attendants’ hair, the document stated that their locks must have a “natural-looking shade,” meaning “no bright highlights or unnatural tones.”

“Hair that reaches the shoulders or is longer than the shoulders should be pulled back completely and secured away from the eyes, such as in a ponytail, bun, braid, etc.,” it added.

“If your hair is up (like in a ponytail) and extends past the middle of your back, you should pin it back.”

Regarding jewelry, Delta explained in the document that there can be a maximum of two earrings per ear and that the earrings “cannot be larger than a dime.”

‘Earrings may only be gold, silver, white pearls or clear diamonds/diamond-like studs,’ it was urged. ‘No hoop earrings. Ear stretch sizes are not permitted.’

In addition, apart from ‘a piercing on one side of the nose with a pinhead’, no other ‘facial or visible body piercings’ are allowed.

As for clothing, the document states that it must be “professional and well-fitting.”

“Dresses and skirts should be knee-length or shorter,” the article continued.

‘A tie is required with button-down collared shirts for those who choose to wear the men’s uniform.’

Delta added that swearing, chewing gum and using your cell phone or earphones during the interview were strictly prohibited.

‘[Delta flight attendants] “We must be passionate about improving every customer’s experience while also showcasing the Delta brand,” the airline concluded.

‘A Delta flight attendant is expected to provide a welcoming, enjoyable and caring experience while creating moments that matter for our customers.

‘The customer service experience begins the moment a flight attendant puts on her uniform.

‘The Delta uniform symbolizes that safety always comes first, that we are proud of the Delta culture and that we radiate genuine friendliness that our customers will remember.’
