'Denigrating nation for personal gain': What government said about Indians seeking asylum abroad
NEW DELHI: The central government on Thursday said the Indians seeking asylum abroad “denigrated” the nation to gain “personal gain.”
The comments came in response to a question whether data was available on the number of “Indians who have sought asylum abroad during each of the last three years and the current year, by country” and what steps have been taken to prevent this . address the issue.

“The Government of India believes that asylum seekers, while seeking asylum from a foreign government, denigrate the nation and society for personal gain, despite the fact that India, as a democratic country, provides opportunities for all to legitimately redress their grievances recover.” External Affairs Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
The government said no data was available because the “foreign governments involved allege an inability to share such data due to privacy and data protection laws.”
This came after data from the US Department of Homeland Security showed that the number of Indians seeking asylum in the US rose by 855% in the past three years.
According to data, asylum applications rose from 4,330 in US fiscal 2021 to 41,330 in fiscal 2023. Indian officials reported that nearly half of these asylum seekers are from Gujarat.
