‘It’s totally true’: Deontay Wilder’s promoter Shelly Finkel admits he avoided a ‘great’ offer from Eddie Hearn to confront Anthony Joshua because of his fight with Robert Helenius…with Brit now in talks to instead take on Tyson Fury

- But Deontay Wilder was more focused on preparing for the fight with Robert Helenius
- Finkel refuted the idea that he hated Hearn, explaining that he just disagreed with him
- He also revealed that he had received a message about Oleksandr Usyk to Wilder
Shelly Finkel, manager of Deontay Wilder, has responded to Eddie Hearn’s claims that he ignored the offer of a fight against Anthony Joshua.
Finkel admitted to ignoring Hearn’s approach to stage a ravishing showdown between Wilder and Joshua, opting instead to focus on the American’s upcoming fight with Finland’s Robert Helenius.
Hearn had revealed to Seconds Off that he approached Wilder’s team to draft a combat deal, but after not receiving a word, he suspected that Wilder was not interested.

Deontay Wilder hasn’t fought since losing to Tyson Fury for the second time in a row in 2021
Finkel told talkSPORT: “It’s come out a few times by Eddie Hearn that I’ve avoided him. That’s partially true, well, it’s totally true. We’re arguing with Robert Helenius. Eddie emailed me, “Can we talk? I’ve got some big… [offer] for Deontay.”
“Right now we have the Helenius fight, that’s all we need to focus on. Because if something went wrong there, there would be nothing else. And if it goes well, everything will be fine. And I felt like if I got a call with Eddie, the next thing you’d call, “Oh, did you and Eddie talk?” So I said to Deontay and Al Haymon, “What do you think?” And they said, “Let’s get this fight out of the way.”
‘Yeah sure, [Hearn says]”Shelly hasn’t even talked to me.” I think he also feels like I don’t like Eddie. No. I don’t always agree with him, we’re on opposite sides, he’s got a fighter that will hopefully be an opponent for one of my guys, Deontay in this case, and it’s nothing like that.

Wilder and his people focus on an upcoming October fight against Robert Helenius
“Barry Hearn and I, we go back 30/40 years and it’s always been very cordial. And the Eddie thing, look, he hasn’t been around as long as he thinks he has, but he’s done some really exciting good stuff, so I give him credit for that.
And when it comes time to make a deal, it gets done, or it doesn’t. It worked out with Wladimir Klitschko and now he seems to be on his way to fight Tyson Fury, I wish him the best.”
With Wilder set to fight Helenius on October 3, and Tyson Fury slated to face Joshua in one of the most highly anticipated fights in the division’s history, Oleksandr Usyk is eager to arrange a meeting with Wilder.

The Ukrainian holds the WBO, WBA and IBF belts and looked close to a clash with Fury, before the Gypsy King appeared to shift his focus to an all-British showdown with Joshua.
And Usyk has also set his sights elsewhere, identifying Wilder as his next potential opponent, stating that he wants to be ringside for his clash with the Finnish fighter next month.
Finkel added: “Recently we got word that Usyk will fight us if Joshua goes Fury’s route, yes we are open to that, we are not against that at all.
And if not, there’s Andy Ruiz Jr, there are several other options.
‘In my mind, to the Fury’ [vs Joshua] something came up, I thought we’d talk to Helenius after the fight, Eddie and I, but things happen.’
