Desperate bride offers stranger over £750 to be her mother-in-law’s date

NIGHTMARE Mothers-in-law seem to be a permanent fixture at weddings these days, whether they have an opinion on your plans or, God forbid, wear white.

But one bride is so determined not to let her mother-in-law ruin her day that she’s willing to pay £777 for the privilege.

The bride-to-be placed an ad on Craigslist seeking a date for her groom’s mother, offering a $1,000 (£777) reward.

The ad has since been shared on the subreddit That’s It I’m Wedding Shaming, where people are applauding her efforts.

In her ad, the bride writes, “I am looking for a wedding date for my mother-in-law from Friday evening to Saturday evening for a Hudson Valley wedding in August.

“She needs constant attention and supervision. She will likely wear white and try to escalate minor dramas – your job is simply to distract and de-escalate.

“Flatten her for two days and earn $1000 easily.”

The bride goes on to explain that the potential date should also be between 40 and 60 years old, a good conversationalist, a good dancer and that “experience with narcissists is a plus.”

They must pretend to be a guest who enjoys spending time with the mother-in-law and can give her all the attention.

No suit is provided, but the cost of a hotel room, food and travel expenses are added.

The bride concludes the ad by asking for a photo and a brief description of her identity, and says that they will be conducting a background check for security reasons.

Other Redditors immediately cheered her idea, with many agreeing that they would try it themselves.

“The sad thing is that this is brilliant and I will keep the idea,” one person wrote.

Another agreed, adding: “I love everything about this. Shut up and take my money!”

A third wrote: “Perfect idea. It’s sad that people have to do this but it’s f***in genius.”

Why It’s Time to Say Goodbye to Wedding Favors Once and for All

By Josie Griffiths, Deputy Editor of Digital Fabulous and bride-to-be

Josie Griffiths said: When was the last time you saw something in a shop window or searched for it online and thought, “That would be the perfect gift for 120 of my closest friends, colleagues, family members and the partners of my boyfriend’s mate who I barely know”?

I’ll tell you when: never, because there is NO universal gift that everyone loves – unless you want to bankrupt yourself buying Rolex and Tiffany jewelry, but even then they’re not to everyone’s taste.

So why do brides still add the stress (and expense) of thank you gifts on top of everything else they already have to arrange?

I’ve been to dozens of weddings over the past five years. When I got engaged, I already had a mental list of do’s and don’ts for my own big day. Cutting out favors was definitely on it.

The cost of buying an individual gift for everyone in attendance is enormous, so many couples try to keep it under five euros.

But the reality is that no one wants a cheap, poorly thought out souvenir. They would probably rather get a free drink from the bar.

And that’s not all: wedding bags are notoriously small, leaving no room to cram in an unexpected gift. Plus, waiters have a bad habit of snatching away favors when they clear the coffee from the table.

I bet none of my guests will notice that there are no random gifts on their dining table.

If you really hate not buying anything for your guests, a donation to a good cause is always a nice gesture.

But the last thing your friends and family need is more clutter in their home, so spare them the guilt of throwing away your Etsy-bought keychain.
