Developers now have access to OEM labs with Google’s Android Device Streaming
Google announced Android Device Streaming beta at its I/O 2024 event in June. It’s a Firebase project that lets developers remotely access physical devices from popular Android original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Samsung, Oppo, and more. Now, the company says it’s opening up early access to the program to OEMs, allowing devices hosted by their respective labs to be used remotely by developers to build and optimize apps.
Early access to streaming on Android devices
In a blog afterGoogle has revealed that it will allow OEMs to connect their device labs to Android Device Streaming via Android Studio. With this move, it aims to expand the catalog of devices that developers can access. Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo have been announced as the first OEMs to partner with Android.
According to the company, developers can access device labs set up in different locations around the world using Android Device Streaming in Android Studio. Access to individual OEMs can be granted or revoked by the Firebase project maintainer. Google says that Android devices hosted by OEMs will offer the same performance, stability, and security benefits as those hosted by themselves.
Android Device Streaming gives developers remote access to flagships, foldables, and other handsets running the latest Android 14 operating system, as well as older versions like Android 8.1. This allows them to test their apps on different orientations and form factors, and test their stability, behavior, and performance on a range of devices. It also provides access to Android Studio tools like Debugger, Profiler, Device Explorer, Logcat, Compose Live Edit, and more, which can communicate with the devices remotely.
How to register
According to Google, developers can sign up for access to OEM Device Labs by filling out a form. form. They will be notified if their application is accepted. During the early access program, OEM devices will not be billed or counted towards their promotional monthly quota.
The Android Device Streaming project is currently in its promotional period, giving developers access to higher minutes at no extra cost. It ends in February 2025.
