Dhaka is optimistic about ties with India and wants concerns addressed
DHAKA: Interim Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Government of Bangladesh Md. Touhid Hossain expressed optimism on Saturday about the prospects of building a strong relationship between Bangladesh and India despite the challenges posed by recent developments, even as he acknowledged that while the previous Hasina government made efforts to address the concerns of New Delhi to allay, Dhaka’s concerns remain unresolved.
While he says that unresolved issues such as water sharing and border murders still require attention, Hossain stressed that both countries must adopt a realistic approach considering the situation after August 5. “We are hopeful that we can build a good relationship with India and protect the interests of both countries,” Hossain said at a roundtable discussion titled “Bangladesh-India Relations: Expectations, Barriers and Future”.
Hossain pointed out the lack of progress on the Teesta Treaty, which has been a long-standing concern for Bangladesh. “We expect progress on this front,” he said.
He also expressed his country’s strong stance against border killings, a recurring problem on the Bangladesh-India border. “These killings are unacceptable,” he stressed, saying this is the only border in the world where people are shot dead when there is no war situation. He also underlined the need for foster care mutual trust.
