DHS sets the ground rules for companies using AI
- The US Department of Homeland Security is launching a new AI security framework
- It is designed for critical infrastructure sectors and focuses on the entire supply chain
- It is in line with other government efforts to maintain safety in the use of AI
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has done just that introduced a new set of guidelines in an effort to promote the safe and responsible use of AI in what it considers critical infrastructure sectors.
The ‘Roles and Responsibilities Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Critical Infrastructure’ hopes to address existing challenges so that AI can be more widely used in areas where its time-saving properties are important.
In an announcement, DHS said the framework is the first of its kind for all levels of the supply chain, including cloud and computing companies, AI developers and even consumers.
DHS develops AI security framework
The framework aims to address the risks associated with artificial intelligence, including system vulnerabilities and attacks. Noting the increase in the deployment of generative AI in these critical infrastructure sectors, DHS added, “Given the increasingly interconnected nature of these systems, their disruption could have devastating consequences for homeland security.”
“If widely adopted, the framework will go a long way toward better ensuring the safety and security of critical services that provide clean water, consistent power, internet access and more,” said DHS Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas.
“I urge every executive, developer and elected official to adopt this framework and use it to build a more secure future for all.”
The framework is broken down into a series of actions for each member of the supply chain, including cloud and computing infrastructure providers, AI developers, owners and operators of critical infrastructure, members of civil society such as universities and research institutions, and public sector entities such as federal institutions. , state, local, tribal and territorial governments.
US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo added: “This new framework will complement the work we are doing at the Department of Commerce to ensure AI is deployed responsibly in our critical infrastructure to help our -Help protect Americans and secure the world’s future. American economy.”
