The origin of the popular healing balm Vaseline has made people shocked – and some now have more questions than answers.
In an episode of Qi, broadcast by the BBCSandi Toksvig asked her guests if one of them had the origin of Vaseline – which is often used to calm dry skin.
It is quickly pointed out that this is ‘petroleum jelly’ before Sandi launches a long -term retelling of its origin story.
“There was an American chemist named Robert Augustus Chesebrough in English and originally he had a sperm oil of potsen,” she says.
“And strangely enough it went bankrupt and became less popular. So there was a large oil look in the United States, especially in Pennsylvania in 1859.
“So he thought:” What am I going to do? ” ‘
The chemist noted that the oil workers in Pennsylvania used the Smunkers who gathered around the drill bars to cure cuts and burns, Sandi explains.
“And he spent 10 years perfecting a process to distil it in petroleum.

“He called it Vaseline as a trademark in 1872.”
But, Sandi explains, nobody was interested, so he would travel on a horse and sell cars what he called ‘Wonder Jelly’.
“To show how brilliant it was, he burned pieces of his own skin – and it didn’t take long before he sold a pot per minute.”
