Moana 2 tasks its heroine with reaching the cursed island of Motufetu to reconnect the people of the ocean. It won’t be an easy task as she faces a brutal storm thanks to the power-seeking god Nalo, who is bent on keeping everyone separated. Before Moana and her seafaring friends have to deal with the bad weather, they become trapped in a giant mollusk that houses the mysterious (and apparently evil) character Matangi.
Despite her bat-filled abode and her affinity for holding demigods captive, Matangi turns out to be one of the good guys. She reunites Moana and Maui so they can brave the storm and imparts some wisdom about getting lost. The essence is that Moana, as a wayfinder, can find new ways forward instead of just relying on what is known. Matangi helps the film’s heroes behind Nalo’s back, and she is unwillingly tied to her unattractive house.
Matangi’s advice comes in handy, and Moana eventually manages to reconnect the ocean. Those wondering what happened to the bat lady will have to wait until the mid-credits scene.
In this bonus sequence, the audience sees not only Matangi, but also Nalo, who is angry that Moana has broken his curse. Matangi doesn’t act her part, but things don’t look good for her anyway, while Nalo bellows, “We’re just getting started.” Then, laughing evilly, one of the villains from the first Moana film comes into view: the carrion-eating crab Tamatoa. Nalo isn’t happy about it, zapping away the remains of his rusted collection of shiny things. That doesn’t stop Tamatoa from talking about himself and debuting a song called Funky Crab Legs, which you definitely won’t find on the Moana 2 soundtrack.
