Maria will undoubtedly draw a large crowd when she competes for the second and final time in the women’s javelin final at the Stade de France on Saturday during the Paris Games.

The Polish athlete, who also survived cancer, is known not only for her beauty but also for her generous heart. She auctioned the silver medal she won at the Tokyo Games as part of a fundraising campaign.

Before her spectacular performance at Tokyo 2020, Maria competed in the 2016 competition in Rio, where she achieved her personal best and a new Polish national record – 67.11 metres – although she unfortunately missed out on a bronze medal by just two centimetres.

Maria’s current personal best in the sport is a throw of 71.40 meters, set in 2021. It is the Polish record and the third best result in the history of the women’s javelin competition.

The impressive javelin thrower hails from Suwałki, a city in northeastern Poland. She has 164,000 followers on her Instagram account, where she shares training videos and cute photos of her traveling and cuddling her dog.

The Olympic medalist clearly has a good sense of humor, writing in her social media bio: “Pretty good at throwing sticks.”

In a recent post, Maria shared a selection of adorable photos from her travels around London with friends. She was considered one of the most desirable women in Poland in 2018, but was taken off the market by athletics coach and former journalist Marcin Rosengarten, with the pair appearing together at several posh sporting galas.

Maria’s appearance in Paris will be her first Olympic Games since her impressive display of generosity following the 2021 Tokyo Games.

Less than two weeks after the thrower won the silver medal, she put it up for sale on Facebook in an effort to raise money for Miłoszek Małysa, an eight-month-old boy who desperately needed money to travel from Poland to California for life-saving heart surgery.

She wrote on Instagram at the time: ‘I didn’t have to think about it for long, it was the first fundraiser I participated in and I knew it was the right one. Miloszek has a serious heart condition and needs surgery.

‘He already has a head start on Kubus, a boy who didn’t make it in time, but whose wonderful parents decided to pass on the money raised.

‘And in this way I also want to help. It is for him that I am auctioning my Olympic silver medal.’

Maria herself had been diagnosed with cancer after an X-ray of her sinuses in 2018 revealed she had osteosarcoma, a form of cancer that occurs in the bones.

Fortunately, the Polish thrower was able to receive treatment for her condition and chemotherapy was not necessary, and she was able to start training for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan shortly after.

‘I believe that fate is sometimes very unfair, when it brings a person a lot of suffering from the very beginning of his life on earth.’

Since her experience with cancer, Maria has been committed to helping others who suffer from this condition, as well as helping children who struggle with similar problems.

She said Survivor: ‘I think my health issues made me want to help others because I understand what it’s like and how hard it is. I knew I wanted to help a little person who was in pain.

The Pole said her dedication to her beloved sport was a major factor behind her recovery and her motivation to help and support others.

During her charity collection, Maria acknowledged the true value of a medal, but stressed that she wanted to “give the happiness back” to someone else.

“A medal is just an object, but it can be of great value to others,” she said at the time.

The fundraising for baby Miloszek had raised 1.5 million Polish zloty, just over £280,000. Maria hoped to raise half that amount by auctioning off her medal.

Polish supermarket Zabka won the auction, raising a total of £130,000. Thanks to further contributions, the target of £140,000 has now been exceeded.
