In recent news, a jury in New York has ruled that the former US President Donald Trump must pay $83.3 million for defaming columnist E. Jean Carroll in 2019 while he was in office. The penalty, which consists of $18.3 million in compensation and $65 million in punitive damages, stems from an earlier case in which Trump was convicted of defaming and sexually assaulting Carroll in the 1990s.
Trump, who plans to appeal the decision, called the case a witch hunt and criticized the ruling as “complete idiot.” The damages are intended to compensate for the harm to Carroll’s reputation and emotional well-being. The jury of seven men and two women reached its verdict in less than three hours.
