‘Don’t destroy Babasaheb’s legacy’: Ambedkar ‘conversion’ comment from ex-Congress MLA angers BJP | India News – Times of India
Union Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who recently announced that the government is coming up with a book to mark 75 years of India’s adoption of the Constitution, said Babasaheb BR Ambedkar’s views are well documented in his own books.
“Congress leader Syed Azeempur’s statement that ‘Ambedkar almost became a Muslim but eventually became a Buddhist’ is wrong. Babasaheb BR Ambedkar’s views are well documented in his own books. Please do not mislead and destroy Babasaheb’s legacy,” Rijiju wrote. on X.
Earlier in the day, ex-Karnataka MLA Sayed Azeem Peer Khadri stirred the pot after he alleged that Ambedkar had made extensive preparations for his conversion to Islam before finally opting for Buddhism. Khadri further suggested that if Ambedkar had embraced Islam, the entire Dalit community would have followed suit.
However, after the comments quickly went viral on social media, the Congress party distanced itself from Khadri’s statements. Meanwhile, the BJP, which has been trying to turn the tables on the Opposition’s allegations of ‘Constitution in jeopardy’, seized on the ex-MLA’s comment.
BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya said former Congress MLA Syed Azeempeer Khadri is “fake and phony”.
“Baba Saheb had nothing but contempt for Islam. He called Islam a closed enterprise, a brotherhood of Muslims for Muslims only. His powerful words are well documented in his book Pakistan or the Partition of India. The opposition’s attempt to forge a social coalition between Dalits and Muslims is a mirage and will never succeed,” he wrote on X along with an image of Ambedkar’s words.
Recently, the government announced that it is coming out with a book to mark 75 years of India’s adoption of the Constitution and to expose all those who opposed it.
‘We are coming up with a book about the Constitution of India to celebrate the completion of 75 years. How was the Constitution formed and who were those who opposed it? We say nothing. Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru opposed it in the Sanvidhan Sabha, and this has been documented. We are not saying this,” Rijiju said.
“We will put all this before the public and Congress will regret all its steps. During the Lok Sabha elections, they gathered some votes by spreading a fake story. The Congress has already been exposed by post-election developments, including Rahul Gandhi with a A notepad with a ‘red’ cover reads ‘Constitution of India’. We convey this message to the voters. “The Congress continues to reconcile minorities and divide the country’s underprivileged communities,” he added.
The government will also hold a special joint session of both Houses of Parliament on November 26 to mark the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution.
The NDA and INDIA blocs have intensified their verbal duel over the Constitution as Assembly elections draw closer in some key states. Both blocs have tried to present themselves as a true ‘protector and follower’ of the Constitution. The Congress-led INDIA coalition has accused the BJP-led alliance of ‘undermining’ the Constitution and constitutional values, while the BJP and its allies have responded by targeting the Congress.
