Katie curled her hair and wore gold jewelry as she asked her followers: “Is this dress too white to wear to a wedding? HELP.”

NO WHITE ALLOWED

Someone said, “No shade of white, including cream, ivory, beige, anything even remotely resembling it, should be worn to a wedding!”

I am 5’8″ and size 17 and I bought a bunch of gorgeous, affordable wedding guest dresses from a store I haven’t been to in 15 years

Another added: “Girl, it’s common sense to never wear white to a wedding, ANY shade of white.”

Someone else asked: “Is this satire?????”

Katie confirmed: “Absolutely not.”

Why You Should Never Wear White to a Wedding

JOSIE Griffiths, deputy editor at Fabulous, who is tying the knot this year, has shared her thoughts on wearing white to a wedding…

Josie Griffiths said: I consider myself a low-maintenance person when it comes to fashion and beauty.

I can be out the door in 20 minutes in the morning, normally put on my mascara on the bus or subway and spend my work-from-home days in my workout clothes.

But when it comes to my wedding this summer, that all fell through.

Professional hair and make-up treatments were booked for 8am, I went all out for my wedding dress, bought designer shoes and even bought a second dress for the evening party.

So if I think about someone wearing a white dress on my big day, I think I’d be pretty mad.

The idea behind not wearing a white dress is based on the idea of not ‘overshadowing’ the bride.

Which, to be fair, is unlikely. Not only has she potentially spent a small fortune on her look for the day, she’s also one of the only two people in attendance who knows (and hopefully likes) all of the guests.

The biggest risk you run is making a fool of yourself and becoming the victim of gossip from complete strangers.

A wedding guest I met in October 2022 is still etched in my memory. I still don’t know what was worse: the fact that she was so drunk that she bumped into people on the dance floor, or her decision to wear a white dress, which was perhaps made slightly better by the glass of red wine she had drunkenly downed.

I know weddings are expensive for everyone and if you don’t want to buy a whole new outfit that’s fine I’m all for reusing what you already have in your wardrobe.

Avoid the white dress, for the sake of the bride – and yourself.

While one user wrote: “Nice dress, but girl, you know better!!”

Katie then claimed: “It’s cream!! Very different from pure white!”

UNSUITABLE

Additionally, many social media users instructed Katie to “take it off now,” while another advised, “Don’t you dare.”

Another joined in the conversation: “It would be disrespectful to wear it.”

Wedding Guest Etiquette

If you’re having trouble choosing a dress for wedding season, here are a few rules about what not to wear so you don’t get into trouble.

  • According to tradition, wearing red to a wedding means you have slept with the groom.
  • Informal clothing such as jeans and flip-flops should always be avoided.
  • Any color that can be recognized as white or cream, even if it is not.
  • Most will agree that your décolletage should be covered.
  • Wearing white is absolutely taboo if you are not the bride.

While one woman explained, “If someone wore that to my wedding, I would literally never speak to them again.”

At the same time, a fashion fan warned: “Please don’t behave inappropriately at someone’s wedding.”

TIME FOR WINE

Many social media users were clearly impressed with the dress, claiming they would pour red wine over it.

One woman shared: “Red wine straight away.”

A second chimed in: “If you show my wedding like this it will turn red.”

While a third wrote: “I’ll pour wine on it.”
