NEW DELHI: In the midst of controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modes‘s visit to RussiaNSA Ajit Doval spoke with his American counterpart Jake Sullivan on Friday. According to a readout by the Indian government, they discussed a wide range of issues of bilateral, regional and international concern and upcoming high-level engagements under the Quad framework to be held in July and later in the year.
“They agreed to work closely together to further enhance India-US relations, which are based on shared values and common strategic and security interests,” the readout said, adding that they reiterated the need to work collectively to address global peace and security challenges. Since Modi landed in Moscow, the US has repeatedly raised concerns about India’s ties with Russia. US Ambassador Eric Garcetti echoed some of these concerns when he said on Thursday, without referring to Modi’s visit, that India-US ties are not deep enough to take India for granted.
It is telling that one day the NSA spoke to the US Vice President Kamala Harris had a telephone conversation with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
