Drastically Lowering Your Air Conditioner Temperature Is a Mistake, Says a Pro – 6 Tips to Cool Your Home
Beating the heat is a breeze with budget-friendly tips from a pro, so you can stay cool all summer long.
He even recommended a new variation on an old tried and tested method: the hot water bottle, to keep the temperature at home pleasant.
James Longley, Managing Director at Utility provideris an expert in reducing utility costs.
He advised strategically opening a few windows.
“Just like in winter, cross-ventilation is essential. We recommend opening several windows in the house in small amounts to allow a breeze to blow through,” he said.
“Also, the later in the evening, the more windows you can open, so you wake up in a cool house.”
Longley shared a few more tips for staying cool without breaking the bank.
He advises turning off fans when you’re not using them, as they normally only circulate air.
He has a different approach to air conditioning.
“It’s also important to know that drastically lowering your thermostat will not cool your home any faster,” he said.
“Air conditioning units typically do not run at a consistent rate. If you set the thermostat as low as possible, the air conditioner will run longer.
“Instead, you should reduce the temperature gradually and in small increments until you reach the desired temperature.”
STEPS TO SUCCESS
Longley provided six cost-effective tips to ensure your home stays cooler in the warmer months.
First, he advised keeping windows and blinds closed during the day to keep out warm air circulation.
He added that at night, when it gets colder, you can open the windows so that you wake up refreshed.
Longley also gave a tip for a jug.
“Whether you’re working from home or having trouble sleeping because of the heat, fill your bottle with cold water and put it in the fridge for one to two hours,” he said.
“This gives you a cooling method that will lower your body temperature for a significant period of time.”
As a third tip, he indicated that drinking enough is essential to beat the heat.
In addition, when opening windows he uses a special technique to get the most out of them: he sprays the curtains with cold water.
“With this trick we hope that the air in the bedroom will become cooler and that you will therefore sleep better,” he said.
Longley also suggested cooking outside on a grill, avoiding the heat of appliances like ovens.
Finally, he added that placing a cold, damp washcloth on the pulse points will help cool it down.
