Dyson expert reveals 3 cleaning mistakes many Brits make and how to fix them
You might think that your trusty mop is the best way to make your floors shine.
But you could also just be moving wet bacteria around the room, claims a cleaning expert at Dyson.
A staggering one in three Brits haven’t changed their mop in six months, meaning they’re doing more harm than good when it comes to cleaning.
Dyson’s Geli Lee warns that a dirty mop doesn’t make for a truly clean floor.
A survey of 2,000 adults found that one in 10 uses the same, strong-smelling mop head 100 times before switching to another.
A scandalous 53% admit they rarely clean the spaces behind appliances and let dirt build up.
And when they do mop, 41% only change the water in the bucket when it looks dirty.
“Proper and regular cleaning of your hard floors is important for maintaining a healthy environment around your home,” Geli explains.
“Without a good cleaning routine, dirt can unknowingly build up and spread throughout your home.
“Our research shows that current mopping habits mean British households are not cleaning their floors as effectively as they should.”
The research also found that 45% of Brits change dirty water when they move between rooms, but 9% never change it for clean fluid.
The result? You just spread dirt from room to room.
It also turned out that 28% of people mop their floors once every two weeks or less.
Only 41% of us have a set cleaning schedule and 60% need to see visible dirt or dust to get motivated to clean.
Despite this, 22% of Brits still worry about their floors being dirty after mopping, while one in four are “extremely concerned” about dust.
Geli adds: “From ignoring problem areas where dust and dirt build up, cross-contamination with dirty water to not replacing mop heads or inconsistent cleaning.
“Current mopping behavior can lead to floors becoming dirtier instead of cleaner.
“Wet floor cleaners move away from traditional methods and simplify the floor cleaning experience, providing a modern, efficient and hygienic solution.”
Top tips from Dyson cleaning expert Geli Lee
- Create a cleaning schedule to prevent dirt build-up.
- It is important that the surface is free of dirt. Remove any debris from the floor or other surfaces.
- Choose the right device, because different vacuum cleaners are designed for different floor types and homes.
- Clean your floors ‘little and often’. Regularly washing your floors in areas where people walk helps prevent dirt from building up and being trampled onto your floor.
