Elden Ring reaches 25 million copies sold ahead of Shadow of the Erdtree launch

Elden Ring has sold 25 million copies worldwide, developer FromSoftware confirmed this week. The critically acclaimed action-RPG, which became a global phenomenon upon its 2022 release, reached the milestone ahead of the launch of its first major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, due later this month. Elden Ring is FromSoftware’s best-selling title, surpassing popular titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Dark Souls III, both of which have been sold 10 million units.

Milestone in the sale of Elden Ring

FromSoftware made the announcement in an X post on Wednesday, thanking Elden Ring players. Sales figures likely include both physical copies sold, as well as the downloadable digital release of the game across all platforms. “We’ve come a long way together. We are forever grateful for your passion and support,” the Elden Ring account on X posted following the confirmation.

In February, publisher Bandai Namco confirmed that Elden Ring had sold 23 million copies since its release in February 2022. The RPG has passed the 25 million copies mark in a few months, likely due to the anticipation of its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.

The base game had reached the 20 million mark in sales in February 2023, Bandai Namco confirmed at the time. “The companies would like to thank everyone who played this game from the bottom of their hearts and will continue to develop different ways for fans to enjoy the world of ELDEN RING in the future,” the publisher had said in a statement at the time.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Release

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree was first announced last year and is scheduled for release on June 21 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. The expansion will require the base game to be playable and will also be sold in a bundle that combines the base game into one offer.

Shadow of the Erdtree will focus on Miquella, the brother of the infamous Elden Ring boss Malenia. The expansion will take place in a new region called the Realm of Shadow and will feature a new primary antagonist, Messmer the Impaler. FromSoftware has said that Shadow of the Erdtree is its largest expansion yet and will introduce new characters, a story, and a new map area.

Elden Ring was released on February 25, 2022, and won the Game of the Year title at The Game Awards 2022.
