Emergency services in Hazmat suits descend to EU headquarters in Brussels after ‘suspicious white powder’ is found near President Ursula Von Der Leyen’s office

Emergency services in Hazmat suits have descended on EU headquarters in Brussels after a ‘suspicious white powder’ was found near President Ursula Von Der Leyen’s office.

The Brussels fire brigade told the The Brussels Times that the headquarters, called The Berlaymont, had been given an envelope with the white powder inside.

Emergency services were called to the 13th floor of the building, where Ursula Von der Leyen’s office is, around 11:50 a.m. local time, and it was initially thought to be a fire.

The crews were seen outside the building in Brussels, but the situation is said to be “under control”.

There will be no evacuation of headquarters. The substance is being analyzed by Civil Defense.

Spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade Walter Derieuw said that one person had come into contact with the substance.

They added that they showed no medical symptoms.

Emergency services have placed the room where the envelope was found under quarantine.
