England are planning to invite Jofra Archer to their winter training camp to help the fast bowler return from injury.

Archer, 27, is sidelined with the second stress fracture of the back of his career but hopes to return to soft bowling this month.

He began rehabilitating his right elbow in 2022 after pre-Christmas surgery, only for scans, only to sustain the back injury on the eve of a return to play in June.

Now it is expected that he could finally be match-fit by the end of the year barring further setbacks.

The ECB’s medical team has refused to pressure the Sussex bowler by setting a target date for his return.

But he could travel to Abu Dhabi in November for a pre-Pakistan Test Tour meeting, which will also include players from the English Lions who head to Sri Lanka in early 2023.

Fellow bowler Mark Wood has joined the third test lineup at the Oval this week as he builds his fitness ahead of the Twenty20 tour of Pakistan.
