NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday expressed serious concerns over the arrest of the Hindu community leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in Bangladesh.
“We have noted with great concern the arrest and denial of bail to Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is also the spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote. This incident follows multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh. There have been several documented cases of arson and looting of homes and businesses of minorities, as well as theft, vandalism and desecration of deities and temples,” the MEA said in a statement. statement.
“It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges must be filed against a religious leader who is raising legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings,” it added.
The ministry also highlighted concerns over attacks on Hindus protesting the religious leader’s arrest.
“We urge the authorities of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression,” the statement said.
On Tuesday, a court in Bangladesh rejected the bail application of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a leader of the Hindu organization Sammilita Sanatani Jote, and ordered his capture.
Bangladeshi authorities arrested Das near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday.
Police Detective spokesman Rezaul Karim confirmed Das’s detention at the request of regular police, although specific charges were not disclosed.
According to news portal Bdnews24, Sanatani Jagran Jote’s main organizer Gaurang Das Brahmachari reported that Das was planning to travel from Dhaka to Chattogram by air.
Earlier, on October 30, authorities filed charges against 19 people, including Das, at Chattogram police station in Kotwali for disrespecting the national flag of Bangladesh during a gathering of the Hindu community in the New Market area in Chattogram.
