The Green Bay icon unveiled how he had planned the stunt on the Bussin ‘with the boy’s podcast
And a few weeks later, Matthews revealed how he planned the stunt during an appearance on the Bussin ‘With The Boys Podcast.
‘I watched last year (NFL Draft in Detroit) and it was Calvin Johnson, Barry Sanders, Aiden Hutchinson, Jared Goff, and I thought it was great. You got a mix of legends and current players and they all went upstairs, and they just screamed in the microphone, “he said.
“I was just like I didn’t really just want to come up with it and when Green Bay make some noise, so I was like let’s make this memorable.”
Although Goodell was ‘super cool’ about it when they returned backstage, Matthews admits that he kept the NFL in the dark about the Trump reference for fear that they would try to close it.
“I didn’t tell anyone because I knew the NFL would not approve,” he added. “I knew in the current political climate that you mentioned one political conviction, left, right, as if it just wasn’t going well with the NFL.”
Clay revealed his wife Casey to prepare the fake letter with Trump’s face photographed, before he went on stage and performed it perfectly for the thousands of fans who are present and look even more around the world.
The implementation, delivery, everything was on point, said Matthews. ‘I was happy with how the boys all landed behind me, they enjoyed it, they had no idea, so they were that you know it as fired.
“You know when you can take the chance to put the bears down, you have to take it.”
Matthews himself was the 26th general choice when he was drawn up by Green Bay in 2009. He continued with a total of 83.5 bags in his packers career, making the Pro Bowl six times.
