Exact date on which you should ‘strategically’ turn on your heating to save money
As temperatures start to drop, Britons are faced with the dilemma of saving money or staying warm.
Millions of households will be hit with a hefty £149 rise in energy bills when Ofgem’s new price cap comes into effect in just days.
From October 1, the bills of around 29 million customers on their supplier’s standard variable rate will skyrocket from £1,568 per year to £1,717 per year.
The increase in energy prices will worry many cash-strapped bill payers, especially as the weather turns colder.
When the harsh winter season is approaching, when is the best time to turn on your heating?
According to industry experts, Sunday, October 27 is the ideal date to turn up the thermostat. This coincides with the clock turning back and temperatures starting to drop.
Chat with The mirrorSays heating professional Mark McShane of Boiler Cover UK: “It’s a good strategy to turn on your heating at the end of October as it allows you to prepare for the colder weather ahead whilst avoiding the risk of frozen pipes.
”Maintaining a minimum thermostat setting of 10°C can protect your pipes from freezing, which can lead to expensive repairs.”
However, it is worth noting that some vulnerable households may need to turn on the heating earlier. And if the house is well insulated, it may not be necessary to turn on the heating.

How you can save on your energy bill
SWITCHING energy suppliers can sound like a hassle – but luckily it’s quite easy to switch energy suppliers – and save you a lot of money.
Look around – If you’re on an SVT deal, you’re probably throwing away up to £250 a year. Use a comparison site such as MoneySuperMarket.com, uSwitch or EnergyHelpline.com to see what deals are available to you.
The cheapest deals can usually be found online and are fixed deals, meaning you usually pay a fixed amount for 12 months.
Switch – Once you find one, all you have to do is contact the new supplier.
It helps to have the following information, which you can find on your invoice, on hand to give to the new supplier.
- Your zip code
- Name of your existing supplier
- Name of your existing deal and how much you payA current meter reading
Your current supplier will then be notified and the switch will start.
It will take no longer than three weeks to complete the transfer and your delivery will not be interrupted during that time.

“It’s not doing what it’s supposed to do.”
