- They can be used to kill victims to malignant pages
- There are other ways to get rid of spam, so users must be wary
If you have received a spam -e -mail with a button ‘Menbi shorten’ here ‘, don’t press it -it can do more harm than good.
According to TK Keanini, CTO of DNS filter, who recently revealed that it presses such a button, the recipient sends away from the safety of the E -mail client and to the open internet where possible malicious Landing pages are lurking.
Keanini even claims that one in 644 clicks can lead to a malignant website.
How do you unsubscribe?
Even if clicking on the button does not lead directly to a phishing page, other, more subtle, risks, are also lurking.
Keanini says that hackers would often place that button to see who clicks – whatever they would help determine which E -mail addresses are active and are therefore worthwhile to further target.
The general rule of thumb seems to be – if you do not trust the company that sent the E -mail, the cancellation process also does not trust.
So what is the alternative? The alternative is to register via the e -mail client himself, instead of via the body of the E -mail.
Most e-mail clients have “list-unubsubscribe headers”, which appear as built-in buttons and therefore do not record source code, explains Tom’s Guide. “If your e -mailheader does not contain a link, you can answer your spam filters or try on the blacklist instead,” the publication explained further.
Those who do not have these options can use disposable -mail addresses when registering for different services. Most E -mail service providers allow users to create disposable -mail addresses. Gmail, for example, has a function called “Plus addressing” or “Gmail -Alias”, with which users can adjust their addresses by adding a + and a tag before the @gmail.com address.
In this way the e -mail address used during registration can be your name+shopping@gmail.com. Messages are still in the inbox, but they can easily be followed or filtered.
