Explosion in central Kolkata leaves 1 person injured, bomb squad cordons off area for investigation | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: A 58-year-old ragpicker identified as scottish ragpicker was injured in an explosion at the intersection of Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road in Central Kolkata on Saturday. Bapi Das.
Das, a resident of the footpath on SN Banerjee Road, sustained an injury to his right wrist.
According to sources, the Taltala Police Station (PS) was notified of the incident that occurred at approximately 13:45 hours. Upon arrival at the scene, Officer Commanding (OC) Taltala discovered that the injured person had been taken to hospital. NRS Hospital for treatment.
A plastic jute bag was found at the entrance to Blochmann Street.
The area was immediately cordoned off with security tape and a Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad (BDDS) was called to assess the situation. BDDS personnel arrived, inspected the bag and the surrounding area and, once cleared, allowed traffic to resume.
A person who claimed to be an eyewitness to the incident told ANI, “We were standing nearby when the explosion took place. We immediately rushed to the spot and saw a ragpicker lying there. The person sustained an injury on his right wrist. The sound of the explosion was very loud. The police immediately reached the spot and took the injured to the hospital. The traffic was blocked. No one else was injured.”
Bapi Das, who has no formal occupation and recently started living on the footpath, is currently receiving medical attention. His statement is yet to be recorded, but that will be done once he recovers from the injury. Forensic teams are currently investigating the cause and nature of the explosion along with the police.
