- The most popular VPN providers use a similar Car extension system and practice lawyers claim to go against the Consumer Act of California
A customer in the US has sued VPN provider ExpressVPN due to alleged “illegal” car extension costs.
Plaintiff Timothy Millar has brought a Class Action right against ExpressVPN In the California court on 13 June 2025, who accuses the company of automatically charging him a monthly fee without his permission. Millar tries to represent himself and all other consumers in California who have been sued illegal car renewal costs at least once.
Despite a few exceptions Best VPNs On the market have a similar automatic renewal system to handle user subscriptions. Another provider, NordVPNis confronted with a similar legal case in the US, because a law firm has already submitted on behalf of four claimants.
What the lawsuit is against ExpressVPN
As claimed by the court caseMillar bought a month from the Virtual Private Network (VPN) Software in September 2022, thinking that he made a one -off purchase.
But after his monthly plan had expired, “without the knowledge of him and without his permission, ExpressVPN has registered him in an automatically innovative monthly plan,” reads the case, claiming that “that indictment was and should be repaid illegally.”
According to Miller’s lawyers, such behavior is in accordance with the provider’s obligations The Automatic Extension Act of California (Arl). In fact, the law requires that companies that accept automatic extension systems “obtain clear and striking” disclosures about the automatic extension plan and obtain “confirmive permission” to register consumers. Something that – the lawsuit claims – ExpressVPN has not done “in almost all ways”.
In addition, ExpressVPN is accused of violating the false advertising law by distributing misleading advertisements on the automatic renewal Nature of his plans.
Miller now demands a jury court and financial damage for himself and the proposed class.
TechRadar approached ExpressVPN for comments, and a spokesperson for the company shared this written statement: “We are aware of the submission with regard to a subscription from a few years ago and are planning to defend it. Unfortunately we cannot comment on the specific allegations made in this complaint.
“ExpressVPN has always given priority to transparency and giving users clear information about prices, invoicing and automatic extension-this information is clear and very visible in every step of the checkout process.
“As a cyber security company, offering uninterrupted protection is important for our customers. This subscription model ensures that customers get the protection they need, without failure, on their devices. Customers can automatically engage via their account dashboards or by contacting support.
“We remain aimed at delivering value to our users; ensuring that they maintain control over their digital privacy.”
Time to dump auto-renewal VPN plans?
As mentioned earlier, NordVPN is also confronted with a lawsuit on alleged “illegal and misleading” car innovation practices.
The law firm of Wittels McINTURFF Palikovic has been presenting since April 2024 on behalf of four former NordVPN customers on behalf of four former NordVPN customers -and is insisting on all NordVPN users who had been charged for a subscription that they did not want to come forward.
The same law firm has previously opened investigation into car registration practices against ExpressVPNalso next to Proton VPN And Private internet access (PIA). Nevertheless, lawyers did not have a lawsuit against these providers.
Although it is still early to know whether these current class actions will change how VPN providers will handle user subscriptions once and for all, there are already some exceptions to the market for which you can choose instead of being locked in an automatic renewal plan. Mullvad VPNwhat Axed all recurring subscriptions In 2022 one of them is in the name of the privacy of users.
