Fable 4 – Everything we know so far about the new Fable game
Fable 4currently also simply known as Fableis a reboot of a beloved trilogy of fantasy action role-playing games (RPGs) originally developed by Lionhead Studios. However, the series is set to be revived under new ownership by Playground Games.
The Fable series is known for two things: allowing the player to create exactly the kind of character they want and for its dark humor. For some, the original trilogy is among the best RPGs ever made, with an emphasis on player agency that rivals some of the best single-player games. Fortunately, if Fable 4‘s latest trailer is all to go on, it seems like we can expect the latter in spades. While we haven’t seen any revelations about the upcoming game’s mechanics yet, the latest trailer did show off some great scripting, as well as a hilarious performance from British actor Matt King.
That being said, we do know that Fable 4 will be an RPG. It also seems like it will follow the mold of its predecessors, featuring real-time action with lots of missions to complete and places to explore. Whether we’ll see the return of Fable‘s iconic morality system remains to be seen, but I can’t be the only one who wants to play a fantasy protagonist with a stonking pair of devil horns like you could in the original trilogy, right? Read on to find out all about Fable.

Fable 4 Release Year and Platforms
Fable 4 is set to release sometime in 2025 for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, where it will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass. It’s unknown if it will launch on Xbox One consoles, but it seems unlikely.
This Xbox exclusivity makes it extremely unlikely that Fable 4 will be released on a PlayStation console. We’ll have to wait until the game is shown again, as we currently have no information on when it’s expected to be released.
Fable 4 trailers
The latest trailer for Fable was released during the Xbox Games Showcase event that aired on June 9, 2024. It was another cinematic trailer, featuring Peep Show actor Matt King as a retired hero. It was a fun trailer, but again offered a distinct lack of concrete information about the broader plot or gameplay mechanics. It did reveal that Fable will arrive sometime in 2025. You can check it out below:
At the moment there are only three Fable trailers have been released: the latest, the world premiere announcement trailer, and the one shown at Xbox Games Showcase 2023. While we wait for more, check out the official xbox youtube account to stay informed of new information.
Fable 4 gameplay
Although we have not yet received any concrete details about Fables game mechanics, there were some glimpses of what to expect in the latest trailer. Swordplay was shown off, with a warrior depicted battling a bandit before making some sort of finishing move, throwing them to the ground.
Another gameplay shot showed the protagonist throwing a firebomb at a group of enemies, suggesting that such items might be making a comeback. Unfortunately, that’s all we’ve seen so far, aside from some in-engine cinematics.
That said, Aaron Greenberg, general manager of Xbox Games Marketing at Microsoft, made it clear after the reveal that “it’s clearly going to be a role-playing game” (via GamesRadarWhile this gives us little guidance in terms of specific data, it confirms that Fable 4 will likely, like its predecessors, emphasize storytelling, character customization, and player agency.
Fable 4 main character
We don’t know much about the Fable 4 main character, but there are a few details we can glean from the teasers we’ve seen so far. First, it seems likely that the main character will be a “hero” of some sort. This could potentially mean a connection to The Guild of Heroes – a powerful organization of do-gooders featured in the original Fable (2004).
It also looks like our hero will have to battle Richard Ayoade’s giant at some point. Fable franchise is no stranger to featuring acclaimed actors and comedians. Fable 3 famous included Monty Python veteran John Cleese, comedian Stephen Fry and actor Simon Pegg. The recording of Ayoade in Fable 4 Given this tradition, it seems more likely that more is going on than just a cameo in the trailer.
While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it seems likely that our main character will also be highly customizable. Fable Games have always put a lot of focus on physically and cosmetically customizing your character and it would be strange if Fable 4 not to continue the trend. We could also see the return of physical changes based on character morals. In the original trilogy, bad choices would earn you devil horns and sinister eyes, while good choices would earn you a halo and angel wings. We imagine Fable 4 will iterate on these systems in some way, although we don’t know for sure what the future holds at this point.
