Outrageous Fans BOE the US National Anthem Just Before George Kambosos Takes on Devin Haney

  • Fans Chased The Star Spangled Banner When It Was Performed By Ben Clark
  • Greek and Australian national anthems were played to loud cheers
  • Fans stood as one in front of Advance Australia Fair just before the start of the fight

The lead-up to George Kambosos Junior’s mega fight against Devin Haney turned sour when fans booed the American national anthem at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on Sunday.

Audible cheers were heard as Ben Clark performed the Star Spangled Banner, taking the shine off what had hitherto been an electric atmosphere in the packed room.

It was followed by a rousing performance of the Greek Hymn to Liberty by Tina Kokkalis, which drew incredible cheers from the huge number of Greek-Australian fans in the crowd before the singer launched herself at Advance Australia Fair – with the entire crowd standing in front of the song .

The crowd that Haney booed on his ring walk was expected – but the booing of the Star Spangled Banner was a big disappointment

That boos returned, reaching a crescendo as Haney emerged for his ring walk before the Aussie came out to cheer.

Legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer – whose ‘let’s get ready to rumble’ rule has become synonymous with boxing – introduced the fighters before the opening bell.

Kambosos Jr sent shockwaves around the world last year when he defeated Teofimo Lopez – who entered the fray after defeating Vasyl Lomachenko – to become the WBA, IBF and WBO champion.

The 23-year-old American is undefeated in his 27 professional appearances, most recently taking on Joseph Diaz’s challenge in a one-sided unanimous decision win last December. With a win, he would become the youngest undisputed champion in the four-cushion era.
