Fans of Mrs Hinch swear by a £2 trick to keep water bottles clean and stop mould

Most of us are probably guilty of not drinking enough water, but for one woman, hydration is the least of her problems.

Instead, it keeps her pesky water bottles clean after she uses the same one every day.

Speaking to the popular Facebook group Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, the woman, called Vicky, explained that she usually has to buy new water bottles because they start to leak or break.

“I drink a lot of water, probably five to six bottles a day.

“I always buy water bottles if I drop them etc. otherwise they leak,” the newspaper wrote.

Finally, the H2O fan has managed to get her hands on a bottle she loves, but she has one problem: keeping it clean.

The problem, she explained, is that the nozzle is difficult to reach and therefore becomes extremely dirty, even growing mold.

“Luckily it’s pretty clear so you can see it,” she said.

“I tried to remove it to see if I can clean it, but it won’t come off.

“I end up using a cotton swab to clean it, but I do worry about how much might be in the straw and further down the mouthpiece that I can’t reach.”

Despite rinsing it thoroughly after each use, it still didn’t look very clean.

Vicky added: “The black mold stuff is still getting into the mouthpiece. Any ideas on how to clean the mouthpiece and straw?”

Luckily, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch were prepared with plenty of tips and tricks to banish dirt and mold from those hard-to-reach places.

The cleaning fans overwhelmingly suggested one cheap trick: Milton sterilization tablets.

They can be found for as little as £2 in most supermarkets, so they’re a great budget-friendly option and take the hassle out of hunting for a new water bottle.

“Milton. Let it soak 100% for a while, always do it with mine,” a cleaner commented on the post.

“I soak all my kids water bottle caps in Milton and water and have never had a problem with smelly tops from mold growing. Works great,” a second agreed.

“Soak a Milton tablet and it disappears without having to do anything,” wrote a third.

And another agreed: “Milton tablets are perfect for this, you don’t even have to scrub.”

Meanwhile, others suggested using a straw cleaner for that extra bit of peace of mind, but not everyone thought it was necessary.

How often should you clean your water bottle?

You might think that because it’s just water, your water bottle wouldn’t need to be cleaned as often, but you’d be wrong.

According to cleaning expert Leslie Reichert, you should clean your water bottle every day to prevent germs.

“Germany grows on your reusable water bottles after every use,” Reichert said Apartment therapy.

“Combined with the fact that mold and mildew thrive in damp, dark areas, let’s just say this is not a container you would want to drink something out of.”

If you have a screw cap bottle, the cleaning process is simple enough.

Make sure you check the product details of your water bottle before throwing it in the dishwasher.

For bottles with more complex tops, you can use a bottle brush to reach the bottom of the bottle and a small bottle brush, such as a straw brush, to clean the corners of the lid.

For daily maintenance, you can use warm water and detergent to clean the water bottle.
