Fashion editor reveals new fall color that’s ‘more flattering than black’

As fall approaches, our fashion choices adapt to the season.

Instead of the bright colors typical of summer, dark shades are often the preferred option for clothing on cooler days.

The color is beloved by top designers such as Chloé, Michael Kors and Tom Ford and 'can make you want to stop wearing only black.'

And for most fashion lovers, black is a shade that people choose, mainly because it creates a super flattering silhouette.

However, fashion editors have said that there’s one color that goes one step further than black: navy blue.

They claim it’s the “ultra-rich color trend that’s better than black.”

Fashion editors at Who Wears Whatclaiming it is a great alternative to wearing only black.

Jasmine Fox-Suliaman, fashion editor at the site, said: “Embracing colour can be a challenge for the fashion world (no colour is intended).

“But by opting for an unexpected neutral, like navy, we can make our everyday staples a lot more elegant with little effort.”

The fashion expert also recommended other shades, such as oxblood, dove gray and even olive green.

They claim that these shades have “conquered the catwalks” and that they “can ironically be considered neutral fall colors.”

But fashion editors at Who, what, wear I think navy will be the new black for the fall/winter season.

Another trend taking the fashion world by storm are brands that take us back to the nineties and noughties.

‘Unexpected neutral’

OASIS will be reuniting next summer for a series of shows, coinciding perfectly with this season’s revival of some ’90s fashion trends.

It’s been 16 years since the Gallagher Brothers disbanded the group that brought us “Wonderwall,” and perhaps even longer since shell jackets became fashionable.

To celebrate Noel and Liam Gallagher’s reconciliation, PrettyLittleThing have launched a clothing line that harks back to their glory days.

While jorts, utility layers, scrunchies and corsets dominated this summer’s fashion scene, some Britpop styles weren’t as warmly received.

To mark the occasion, fashion giant PrettyLittleThing has reintroduced items including shiny cargo pants, bucket hats and shell jackets.

“The Oasis reunion is currently the talk of the town on social media,” Sophie O’Neil, senior stylist at PrettyLittleThing, tells Fabulous.

“Britpop is back in full force, especially with Charli XCX’s Brat Summer taking over the fashion world, so we thought it best to create a new collection of ’90s styles to really capture the aesthetic.

“Think bucket hats, shell jackets, double denim… we’ve got everything you need, whether it’s your first gig or you just love the grunge look.”

Prices start at £12 for a bucket hat, while wide cargo trousers and shell track jackets retail for £36.

A snippet of text from the collection reads: “Britpop is making a comeback and we’re ready for it.”

Fashion editor reveals the ’90s trends that need to be a thing of the past

Trends from the ’90s and ’00s in particular have become a hit with Gen Z — probably because they didn’t wear them the first time around. Here, Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale breaks down some of the trends that made a comeback that we wish hadn’t.

Disc belts

“The belt was a hit with celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Blake Lively, but in itself it didn’t do anything that a belt should do: it was purely a fashion statement, not a piece of jewelry to hang anything up.

“And it seems I’m not the only one who’s furious about its return. Many are voicing their opinions on TikTok, saying, ‘Oh no, not the disc belt! I don’t think I have the energy for that again’ – I get you.”

Jelly shoes

“After decades away from the shelves, they’re back and this time they’re not just for kids.

They come in all sorts of colourful patterns and can be found everywhere on the high street, in flat or heeled versions.

“Not only do you look very childish when you wear shoes like that, but people should also be aware that they are not exactly comfortable. Blister plasters come in handy.”

Pedal pushers

“The cropped, knee-length pant was all the rage in the ’90s and 2000s, but this time around the fashion world is really into them. Both Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski have worn them recently.

“The original IT girls, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot, made the pants – also known as capri pants – look effortlessly cool and glamorous.

“Somehow they don’t seem to have the same effect this time.”
