An Australian tourist who has been missing in New Zealand for more than a week is being cared for.

Elizabeth Wielga, 67, checked out of her hotel in Tongariro National Park on the North Island on August 30.

She was due to leave Auckland that same day, but has not yet contacted her family and has not yet arrived at her next destination.

“Her family and police are concerned for her welfare and want to ensure she is safe,” local police said in a statement.

‘Mrs. Wielga doesn’t have a phone or computer. It’s possible she doesn’t realize the police are trying to find her.’

Police have received information that Ms Wielga may have travelled to Wellington in the South Island.

“Information indicates she plans to travel to Picton,” police said.

“We encourage anyone who has seen Ms Wielga or has information that could help us locate her to contact us.”
