Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania warned colleague Democrats that they could experience a political recoil if they were seen if the not sufficient condemnation of violence by demonstrators in South California, the local officials said they were limited.
On Monday, he posted A photo on social media of a car flooded in flames and a masked, shirtless person with a Mexican flag. He suggested that Democrats – of whom many of whom have in fact have criticized his destruction or violence – should continue to denounce unmanageable demonstrations.
“This is anarchy and real chaos,” he wrote. “My party loses the moral high land when we refuse to set cars to set fire to, destroy buildings and attack law enforcement.”
Local officials in California have described the violence as limited, under control and exacerbated by President Trump’s decision to federalize the National Guard and use troops on the Governor’s objection.
“I am unapological for free speech, peaceful demonstrations and immigration – but this is not that,” wrote Mr. Fetterman. “This is anarchy and real chaos.”
Mr. Fetterman, chosen in 2022, has become one of the Democrats who likes to quote Republicans because he broke with some of his party’s orthodoxy. He checked himself in a hospital for depression early in his first year in the office, and his mental health recently has been the subject of both concern And strict supervision.
Democrats on Capitol Hill tried to pick up his last comments on Tuesday.
“Everyone has the right to their opinion,” said representative Yvette D. Clarke of New York, the chairman of the Black Caucus of the congress.
Some praise, however, seemed to arrive at Elon Musk, the owner of the social media site X, where Mr. Fetterman made his comment. Mr. Musk replied with an American Vlagemoji.
