Fire Hazard: Over 55,000 Organic Mattress Protectors Containing Avocado Recalled
Avocado has been recalled around 55,480 organic cotton mattress protectors because they violate federal flammability regulations, specifically resistance to cigarette ignition. The pods can potentially pose a fire hazard, although no injuries have been reported.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the affected mattress protectors were sold in Avocado stores or online between January 2019 and March 2024. This recall includes all sizes, from twin to California king, and both standard and deep pocket models.
If you believe your mattress protector may have been recalled, check the label attached to it. This will list the brand, date of manufacture, fiber content, and model number. Recalled mattress protectors have the model number SFMPAVORG.
The good news is that Avocado will replace recalled mattress protectors with new ones that meet federal regulations, free of charge. According to the recall page, the replacement mattress protector is GOTS-certified and of the same quality as the original protector.
You cannot get your replacement at a store. You must do this online using Avocado’s recall form.
To receive a replacement, you will need to follow a few steps.
- First visit the Avocado Recall Page to register online via the form.
- Using a highlighter, write the date, your initials, and the word “remembered” on the notepad.
- Cut the mattress cushion in half.
- Take a picture of the mattress cut in half with the written information visible.
- Upload it to the form and receive your confirmation page.
According to the recall page, the replacement mattress protector should ship within 2-3 weeks. If you have further questions, you can contact Avocado by calling 844-326-5009 or by emailing safety@avocadomattress.com.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen mattress brands fail to comply with flammability regulations. Ghostbed and Nap Queen have both had recalls this year.
