First test flight lands at Navi Mumbai airport
IAF inaugurates the runway of Navi Mumbai Airport
MUMBAI: More than eighty years after British India inaugurated the ‘Royal Air Force Santacruz’ airport, now known as Mumbai Airport, the city witnessed the inauguration of a brand new runway when an IAF fixed-wing aircraft during a trial operation landed at Navi Mumbai airport Friday.
The IAF Airbus C-295a tactical airlifter, landed at Navi Mumbai’s at 12.15 pm lane 26“Unlike aircraft like the A320 or B737, the C-295 can land even on unpaved runways and so today’s landing, even though it was on the paved Navi Mumbai runway, has largely ceremonial significance,” said an experienced pilot.
At the air traffic control center in Mumbai, IAF officials along with civilian controllers supervised the inaugural landing at Navi Mumbai, which was conducted by Group Captain PS Negi and Squadron Leader Manpreet Singh. Later, one Sukhoi Su-30 made a low flypast over runway 08-26.
