Fitness First announces shock closure at Westfield Bondi Junction
A hugely popular gym is set to close after decades because its lease in a large Westfield could not be secured.
Fitness First has been operating on the sixth floor of the Westfield Bondi Junction Shopping Center in Sydney’s eastern suburbs for 20 years.
Members were told by email last week that the Bondi Platinum facility would close later this year.
“Unfortunately, after 20 years of dedicated service to the community, it is with deep sadness that we write to inform you of the impending closure of our Fitness First Platinum Gym, at Westfield Bondi Junction later this year,” the email said.
‘We were hoping to secure a new location within the center to build a new premium fitness centre.
‘Nevertheless, we were disappointed to hear at the end of last week that we were unsuccessful in our tender bid.
“Rest assured that we are providing our team with all necessary support during this difficult period.”
The well-known gym chain was still in negotiations with Westfield as to when they would close their doors – and members will be contacted once the day is announced. Yahoo reported.

While Bondi residents still have another Fitness First Platinum plan near Spring Street, it is much smaller than the soon-to-close Westfield gym.
Fitness First has no fewer than 37 gyms in Sydney, 12 in Melbourne and two in Canberra.
Scentre Group (which owns and operates 42 Westfield shopping centres) and Fitness First were both contacted by Daily Mail Australia for comment.
