Darts icon Raymond van Barneveld has announced his intention to gradually close his gaming career.

The Dutchman has enjoyed a career that has been overstrained for more than 40 years so far.

But now his time could end in sport.

He said: “Of course you want to make the match play. But from next year I really have to slow things down. It will all be a bit too much.”

Van Barneveld suggested that he can reduce the number of events where he plays in the near future.

He continued: “Maybe cut back on the Pro Tours. I keep playing the euro tours as long as I am in the top 16. But let’s face it, the schedule is madness – it hardly leaves at any time to rest.”

The Dutchman also admitted that he is now finding it difficult to keep track of the physical demands of the Tour.

“I’ve been doing this for forty years now and I still love it,” he said.

“If you are up there, warms up and hear the crowd – it gives you an incredible sense of pride.

“But although the mind is still prepared, the body does not always follow. That is the difficult part.

“I am struggling with that. It costs a lot of mental energy. I am not sure how long I can continue.”

Van Barneveld initially announced plans to retire after being lost to Darin Young in the first round of the 2020 World Championship.
