Food expert warns never to store eggs in the refrigerator door as they will spoil faster
A FOOD hygiene expert explains why you should never store eggs in the fridge door.
There has been a debate for years about where to store eggs. Some say in the refrigerator, while others maintain that it is better to keep them at room temperature.
But now one professional has finally settled the matter: he says they absolutely MUST be kept in the refrigerator.
Additionally, Melissa Kilcoyne shared that there is a specific spot in the refrigerator that is optimal for eggs.
“Place dairy, eggs, and packaged foods that don’t need to be cooked on the middle shelves, where the temperature is slightly cooler,” says Melissa, Business Development Manager at certified online training provider Virtual College.
But if you store your eggs in the refrigerator, you’re making a big mistake, Melissa warned.
This is because this is the warmest part of the refrigerator, as it is often opened and closed. Products such as eggs stored here spoil faster.
The door is the ideal place for products with natural preservatives, such as sauces and drinks, as these survive better with temperature fluctuations.
As for the rest of the shelves in the refrigerator, the top shelf should be used for “ready-to-eat foods such as cooked meat, sandwich spreads and leftovers, as these will not drip down and contaminate other products.”
If you put leftovers on the top shelf, they will last up to four days, says Melissa.
The bottom shelf in the refrigerator is the coolest part, which means this is the best place to “store raw meat and raw fish”.
And remember to store them in sealed containers to minimize the chance of cross-contamination.
Make your refrigerator even more organized by using the drawers for fruit and vegetables.
“Just make sure to keep them separated, as some fruits, like peaches, plums and pears, can produce gas that can cause vegetables to rot faster,” Melissa added. Express.co.uk.
It’s also important to check for mold regularly, as dangerous bacteria can cause serious illness if ingested.

“Shelves in the door are ideal for these types of items, but otherwise you should store open sauces at the top of the fridge.
“Make sure you clean these every few months to ensure they don’t produce mold spores that become airborne.”
